Portugal’s Golden Visa is an initiative set up by the Portuguese government to boost the economy through foreign investments. It works by granting investors Portuguese residency for investment in different areas of the country.
The visa is known as the ‘fast track’ to Portuguese residency. Holders of the Golden Visa are given temporary residency permits in Portugal which are then renewable for two-year periods.
The most charming feature of Portugal as an investment opportunity rests in its ability to offer citizenship after just 5 years – all without the need to stay in the country. What’s more, is the requirements for a Golden Visa in Portugal are substantially simpler than that of other countries offering permanency via investment. When other countries like UK and Cyprus demand a significant investment of over €1,000,000 euros and minimum several months of stay requirement, in Portugal you can receive citizenship for €280,000 and only 7 days of stay per year.
After five years, you can apply for Portuguese citizenship for the whole family (for example in Spain you have to wait 10 years)
Your dependent children and dependent parents can also be included in the application
Investments start from 280,000 Euros
From your real estate investments, you can receive passive income
Minimum stay requirement is only 7 days per year
Unlike many other Golden Visa programs, the program is not blacklisted by the OECD
You have the option to become a non-habitual resident of Portugal and pay little or no tax for 10 years
Visa-free entry to the Schengen area countries
Beautiful country with friendly people and great cuisine
Capital transfer of a minimum of EUR 1 million into a Portuguese bank account.
EUR 350,000 for national scientific research activities
EUR 250,000 for the recovery or maintenance of national cultural heritage
EUR 350,000 for the acquisition of units of investment funds or venture capital funds
A real estate purchase with a minimum value of EUR 500,000 (any property in any city of Portugal with no restrictions)
A real estate purchase with a minimum value of EUR 350,000 ( properties older than 30 years or in an area of urban regeneration, price is already including the cost of renovation, no extra payments are required)
A real estate purchase with a minimum value of EUR 280,000 (If the property is located in so-called “low-density areas”of the country (areas with less than 100 inhabitants per sq.km., or where the GDP per head is below 75% of the national average), the value of this investment may be reduced in 20%. Meaning, that you can buy a new property instead of €500,000 for €400,000 and still get the Golden Visa.)
Creation of a minimum of 10 new jobs for locals
EUR 350,000 for the incorporation or increase of the share capital of a Portuguese company, creation and maintenance a minimum of five permanent jobs for a period of three years
Regarding the Golden Visa application, the initial steps are the following:
Obtaining a Portuguese Tax Number;
Opening a Portuguese Bank Account;
Transfer into the Portuguese Bank Account the funds addressed to property investment.
The application itself is compressed of 3 main steps:
Application (through the Immigration Office’s website, where scanned copies of the required documentation are uploaded);
Pre-Approval: The Immigration Office will analyze and rule on the application submitted online. The pre-approval means that the Immigration Offices confirms the documentation is complete and valid, allowing you to move forward to the actual submission of the original documentation and biometrics collections (fingerprint scanning, digital photo and digital signature);
Schedule of Appointment for Documentation Submission and Biometrics Collection.
