There is a growing expat community in Portugal, with people moving there from all over the globe. We have compiled a list of the top cities in Portugal to help you narrow down your options when deciding where to settle down. The recommendations in this list come from the NomadList, which considers various criteria, including the cost of living, access to healthcare, weather, safety, family life, and more.

Best Location for Nomads & Retirement?

Foreigners chose Portugal for its nice temperature, attractive coastline, affordable property, and cheap cost of living compared to other nations. Portugal boasts magnificent historic fishing towns, charming cities, and retirement communities. Here are some of Portugal's top spots for retirees.

Algarve

The Algarve area on Portugal's southern coast is a popular retirement spot. Forbes named this place the "best cheap alternative in Europe for retirees" due to its golden beaches and magnificent cliffs. The Algarve is popular with English-speaking expatriates, so retirees may surround you.

The area has 16 municipalities and numerous retirement communities. Property prices in the Algarve vary on location, although they are cheaper than in other areas of the nation (the cheapest property in the Algarve is located away from the shore). The cost of living is likewise lower than in large cities. The Algarve is safe and suitable for retirees who seek an active lifestyle, particularly golfers since it has some of the best courses in Portugal and Europe.

Madeira

Madeira is an Atlantic island 1,000 kilometers from Portugal and 600 km from Africa. This area boasts a moderate environment and mild weather for most of the year, making it a perfect spot to retire in Portugal. The archipelago has fewer visitors than the Algarve, but the expat and retirement communities are rising.

Madeira is a terrific spot for individuals who desire to live close to nature and appreciate an island lifestyle.

Lisbon

Lisbon is another fantastic Portuguese retirement choice. Lisbon, Portugal's capital and throbbing heart, draws retirees from throughout the globe. Lisbon offers a strong expat population and lots to do for those wanting an active retirement. It was recently voted one of the top 10 cities with the greatest living conditions for retirees.

Lisbon is one of Portugal's greatest locations to retire, although the city center is more costly and noisier than the suburbs. Setubal, a little city near nature and the region's wonderful natural parks, is another nice choice in Lisbon.

Porto and Northern Portugal

We're moving north on the Portugal retirement map. Northern Portugal's charm, magnificent towns, and scenery make it one of the greatest areas in Portugal for retirees. Apart from Porto, which has a substantial expat population, this area has plenty to offer expats and retirees. This hilly location boasts lovely farmland and vineyards. It is cheap for retirees who wish to live in a less touristy area, including the picturesque Douro Valley, heaven for wine enthusiasts.

Northern Portugal has some of the country's lowest property costs and over 100 km of rough coastline.
