Investment from the United States in Portugal's Golden Visa program increased by 35% in the first half of 2023.

The total investment from the United States was €82.1 million, which resulted in 176 Golden Visas being granted.

In comparison, Chinese investment in the program fell by 1% to €50.1 million.

The Golden Visa program allows foreigners to obtain Portuguese residency if they invest a certain amount of money in the country. The most popular investment is in real estate, but investors can also invest in other areas such as research and development, or venture capital funds.

The increase in investment from the United States is likely due to a number of factors, including the strong performance of the Portuguese economy and the country's attractive tax regime.

Recently, the Parliament of Portugal approved a proposal by the government to discontinue most of the investment options in the Golden Visa Program, including real estate investments. Read The Latest news here.

However, for now, it remains a popular option for foreigners looking to obtain residency in Portugal.

Here are some additional details about the Golden Visa program:

  • The minimum investment amount for real estate is €280,000.
  • The minimum investment amount for research and development is €350,000.
  • The minimum investment amount for venture capital funds is €500,000.
  • Investors must maintain their investment for at least five years.
  • Investors and their family members are eligible to apply for Portuguese citizenship after five years of residency.
