Surf Destination

Ericeira is a region belonging to the municipality of Mafra located on the west coast of Portugal. It is considered the European capital of surfing as it is the only European location among the World Surfing Reserves, a list that includes countries such as the USA, Australia, Peru, Mexico, Brazil and Chile.

The route by the sea, north of Lisbon, is one of the most popular walks along the Portuguese coast. Along the way, you will find Ericeira, a fishing village with a lot of tradition linked to the sea. Alongside this tradition, is the usual presence of surfers who find a special refuge here that currently integrates world surfing championships such as the WSL World Surf League Tour and the Quik Silver Pro Portugal.

The diversity of waves allows different degrees of difficulty, thus providing excellent conditions for the practice of board sports, both for professionals and beginners. For beginners, there are several surf schools available to help with the first waves or improve technique.

The area of coast that was considered by the North American non-governmental organization Save the Waves Coalition, as the 1st surf reserve in Europe and the 2nd in the world, has an extension of 8 km and includes beaches that are a worldwide reference for surfing, such as the beaches of Ribeira de Ilhas and Baía dos Dois Irmãos.

Attractions

Despite being recognized as a World Surfing Reserve, you don’t have to be a surfer to feel at home in Ericeira. With its narrow streets and cozy atmosphere, the beach spirit is lived here throughout the year, welcoming tourists from all over the world.

The beaches near the village are more sheltered due to their high cliffs, and for that reason, more suitable for families with children. Nearby there is also much to discover. With short walks, you can visit the “Aldeia Típica de José Franco”, a miniature clay village, the “Convento de Mafra” that inspired the Nobel Prize for Literature José Saramago in the book “Memorial do Convento”, and the playful space in the “Tapada Nacional de Mafra”.

Another of the great attractions of the region is its gastronomy, full of traditional flavors of the sea. For those who pass by, grilled fish is mandatory, but seafood is also very popular, in particular, Lobster, which is raised in sea pond in Ericeira.
